Axel Christofer Hedfors from Stockholm, Sweden is one of my favorite House producers and goes by stage name Axwell.  Not only is he the driving force behind Swedish House Mafia, but he also slays on the DJ decks.  I first saw him live at the NCMF in Chicago this past year and his set was quite amazing.  A great house set, he kept the energy high and made me forget about wanting to see SHM.  He currently owns his own label and was voted #12 in DJ Mag’s Top 100 of the year 2011.  Below are some of my favorite youtube videos/songs from the man.  Keeping it short and sweet for today, hopefully we can get back into posting more frequently.

Volta Bureau

Volta Bureau is a trio from DC, they have been on repeat in my cubicle all day, so I figured I’d pass on the love! Most known for their hit nu-disco single Alley Cat, they have a ton of other great tracks as well. I remember hearing The Magician drop this track, and I instantly ID’d and downloaded it. Instant Classic. The piano riff in the middle is uhhhmazing. During the past year, they have been featured on the likes of NPR, UBR, and the always epic BBCRadio1. The remix of Pat Lok’s No Shame takes a deeper, darker tone before breaking through into a after-hours techno jam. I really like the different direction on this one, it’s fun to listen to. Their newest EP “HOT” dropped last week, and it contains two tasty tracks. Hot, the title track, combines deep dark bass with a funk overlay. The result is a plodding deep disco jam. The b-side is called The Greatest, and has more of an upbeat world music feel. Both songs feel fresh, and I enjoyed listening to both. I’ll leave with the music video for their indie disco hit Hope. I already enjoy the track, but the video is awesome. Who doesn’t like a singing garage door, and a kidnapping muscle car?

Mike Balance

Our buddy Fun Factory (Ames) will be rocking as the opener for Etienne De Crecy on the 30th so I figured I’d drop some deep and tech house tracks for him today in case he wanted to add any to his set.

With over 17 years of experience, a ridiculously large library of released tracks (nearly 100), and an integral part of Boise’s original party scene, Mike Balance is a career raver. His style is very similar to the famous DJ Dan’s – definitely could be due to the fact that they work side by side at InStereo Recordings. These tracks bring me back to the old warehouse days. Minimal house can take some getting used to for some people who are more used to today’s bangers and slammers, but once you learn to appreciate the tracks you really start to dig the style.

Reckless Gurl is one of the tracks that you just can’t seem to get out of your head. It doesn’t help that I can’t understand all of the lyrics so my brain is constantly trying to fill in what it thinks is best. The vocalist sounds like an old school 1940’s singer and it goes real well with the song. Mike Balance’s remix of M.T.Y.S. is his newest track and he doesn’t fail to bring in his signature style to this one. Ames will dig Voices Sound Better, a mix of tech house and disco that’s done just right. Upping the energy a little bit, You Make Me Feel is a remix you will recognize and Mike Balance does a great job at changing this song to his own style. Energy soared high on the Beatport charts for awhile and this is arguably Mike’s most popular song. Another one Ames is going to dig with the subtle disco style to it.
